Diabetes Care
Diabetes affects more than 37 million Americans and is a major cause of heart attack and stroke. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases that affect a person's blood sugar, or glucose, levels.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly targets the pancreas, which affects the body's ability to produce insulin, which helps control glucose levels in the body. Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed earlier on in a person's life and is managed with insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is more common and is often associated with other health issues such as obesity. It is more frequently diagnosed later on in life and could lead to the body not producing enough glucose. Day-to-day type 2 diabetes management can include diet, lifestyle changes and medications, but treatment can also include insulin.
