Lutheran Hospital Invests in Latest High-tech Surgical Robot
4/15/2025
For years, minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery has been offered at Lutheran Hospital and today we’ve taken another step forward to provide our patients with access to the latest technology.
This new technology minimizes trauma to surrounding tissues and can lead to faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays for patients and is the only system of its kind in Fort Wayne. This investment demonstrates Lutheran Hospital’s commitment to providing patients with the highest standard of care throughout Greater Fort Wayne and takes surgical technology to the next level.
“It reduces operating time and time under general anesthesia,” said Kingsley Okai, general surgeon and surgery department chair at Lutheran Hospital. “My training is heavy in robotics and it gives me more autonomy, allowing me to control multiple things at once. I can review critical steps and adapt to better and improved techniques.”
In 2024, Lutheran Hospital completed 692 robotic-assisted surgeries which are offered 24 hours a day, if deemed necessary by our acute care surgeons.
“We do a high amount of robotic surgeries at Lutheran Hospital and that means we have the experience to help people should they need surgical care. We’re always looking for advancements in technology to enhance the level of care we can provide our patients and we’re committed to learning and advancing our skills,” said Dusten Roe, chief operating officer of Lutheran Hospital.
Like all robotic systems, the surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted system, which can be utilized in several different procedures including urological, gynecology and thoracic procedures, and offers more than 150 enhancements over the previous versions. Major advancements include improved accuracy and precision with force sensing technology, enhanced 3D imaging and better ergonomics for surgeon comfort and surgical viewing.
