Lutheran Hospital honors local food bank's late leader with food drive

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Monday, Nov. 9, 2015) - Members of Lutheran Hospital's Nursing Leadership Group and hospital administrators organized a food drive in honor of Jane Avery, the longtime director of Community Harvest Food Bank and former Lutheran associate who succumbed to brain cancer July 17.

To give back to the community, and to honor Avery's decades-long work to end hunger, Lutheran leadership, nursing staff, and the unit who collected the most food will meet with a Community Harvest Food Bank representative Tuesday, Nov. 10, to take a commemorative photo at Lutheran Hospital. The non-perishable foods and 15 turkeys will be presented at 10 a.m. to CHFB to celebrate Avery's life.

"This year's food drive is more personal for us," said Diane Springer, chief nursing officer, Lutheran Hospital. "Jane has helped so many people in need. She had such a big heart that she compelled us to want to give back to the community to honor her and her cause."

Each nursing unit was invited to participate in a contest to collect the most items. The turkeys are being donated in recognition of the winning unit.

On average, CHFB supplies approximately 250,000 pounds of food a week to nine counties.
