Dupont Hospital Opens Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
10/5/2020
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Oct. 6, 2020) - A new cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab) has opened at Dupont Hospital, providing residents in northern Allen County and beyond with a convenient option for quality diagnostic and interventional cardiology services.
A cardiac catheterization is a specialized study used to check the condition of the heart and coronary arteries, monitor the performance of the heart valves and check for any defects. Cardiac and vascular procedures performed in a cath lab include heart catheterization, peripheral angiography and port placement, among others and can help patients to avoid more invasive procedures.
"With the addition of this technology, Lutheran Health Network cardiologists now have the ability to provide more comprehensive cardiac care at Dupont Hospital," said Mark Meier, M.D., FACC, interventional cardiologist with Lutheran Health Physicians. "The hospital continues to invest in quality resources for patients dealing with heart and vascular issues on the north side of Allen County and beyond."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in Indiana, making early detection and ongoing management crucial. Millions of Americans suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease that affects blood flow throughout the body and can lead to heart attacks, strokes or other series complications.
"With the addition of the cardiac cath lab, we are able to meet the higher acuity level needs of patients at Dupont," said Louis Lopez, M.D., cardiologist with Lutheran Health Network. "We constantly strive to meet the medical needs of the community and we are excited to provide this service.â€
"The addition of our cardiac cath lab reflects our mission and commitment to providing quality care and the best possible experience to our patients," said Lorenzo Suter, CEO. "Cardiac conditions represent a prevalent health challenge in our community - this technology and the clinical expertise of our providers will benefit those we serve every day."
To fully optimize heart health, it is important to schedule annual physical exams with a primary care provider who can detect unexpected issues or assess potential risk factors that may lead to a more serious condition. For some, risk factors such as family history, sex or age can contribute to the development of various cardiovascular conditions.
