Passion for Patients Drives Lifelong St. Joseph Hospital Employee

Honest, dependable and dedicated. These are just some of the words staff uses to describe lifelong Fort Wayne resident and St. Joseph Hospital employee Tanya Sherrill. Raised in a Christian home, Sherrill’s parents felt that her working in a hospital would keep her safe and would be very fulfilling. St. Joseph Hospital, affiliated with the Catholic faith, was deemed to be the perfect fit for the young 16 year old securing her first ever job. In the now 40 years spent with Lutheran Health Network/St. Joseph Hospital, Sherrill has spent several years with behavioral health and currently serves as the department’s intake assessment team specialist. “Working here presents the chance to make a difference in someone’s life, especially when they may be experiencing a crisis,” Sherrill stated. “Many come in to our department with a broken spirit and it is my opportunity to help give back.”

In what was previously deemed a good fit by her family for a first job at a young age has transitioned into a quite a passion for Sherrill – and her work in behavioral health is no exception. “I have seen extremely depressed individuals come in and have been blessed to see the joy that overcomes them as they progress on their journey,” Sherrill stated. “I once worked with a patient who felt she had no hope, but through her treatment, she gained a new sense of light and confidence – it was beautiful. Several months later, she returned to visit and expressed just how much joy she has in her heart and how thankful she was for our team to get her there.”
