Granting a Special Birthday Wish
A stay in the hospital can feel a bit lonely and may leave some patients feeling disconnected from family, friends and their daily routine. What aids to a timely healing is alleviating the suffering which may come from feeling that disconnection. Doing this may be as simple as a healthcare worker going above and beyond for a patient and their family or a caretaker dedicating time getting to know his or her patient better.
As Rex Parker sat in his hospital bed, he longed for just one thing to help him feel better connected: a way to make his wife feel special on her birthday.
After his wife visited on the morning of her birthday, staff overheard Rex telling her how he wished he could have at least just gotten her a birthday cake for her big day. The staff on Lutheran Hospital’s MSIC team wanted Rex’s wife to feel as special as possible on her 93rd birthday, so backed by their supervisor, the team arranged for the hospital’s cafeteria to send up a special cake to his hospital room when his wife came back for evening visitation. It was at this time when she returned that the MSIC group and Rex surprised her with the cake and birthday song. “My wife was so surprised by the thoughtfulness this group showed,” Rex stated. “Lutheran Hospital not only takes great care of its patients, but also cares for the whole family.”
